Exclusive Test Center Review: Excellent Rating, 9.3 Score

Last year, Elemental set the standard for providing host compliancy checks and insight into network traffic patterns. Now, ESP broadens its reach to include more client and server platforms and increases the number of agents a single ESP server can handle. ESP's capability of handling agentless hosts is still one of its most intriguing aspects. Still impressive is the granular policy deployment and the amount of raw information the agents report back to the server. Elemental Security Platform 2.0 has just raised the bar a little higher.

Elemental Extends Visibility and Control
In an impressive debut release, Elemental Security advanced the cause of enterprisewide system monitoring and access control with exceptional reporting and granular policy management. Version 2.0 of the agent-based system, renamed ESP (Elemental Security Platform), advances on both of these fronts by broadening the client platform support and adding more than 300 new predefined rules. ESP 2.0 comes with "more" in just about every aspect of the program. All in all, ESP 2.0 looks like a tremendous update to an already powerful security system.

Review: Elemental Compliance System 1.1 - Innovative, Solid
The server and clients worked flawlessly. Almost immediately, ECS began receiving information, starting with vital data points such as IP addresses, MAC addresses and the host OS. After several minutes, the host compliance was rated. The SSL Web-based interface is clean and well-designed; our tests were a breeze thanks to the simplicity and effective, logical placement of controls. Users can view compliance at a high level or can drill down to individual hosts. Reports can be generated for overall compliance, trending over time, group membership, host attributes and packet filter data.

ESC Agents Protect You from the Unknown
Companies such as Cisco and Sygate have differing methods of accomplishing end-point and network access management, but neither goes as far as Elementary Security's ECS. ECS is a major step toward enterprise-wide monitoring and access control. The level of granularity is superb, and the reporting engine is second to none. I really like the concept of "reverse policy enforcement" to systems not running the ECS agent. For companies looking to get a handle on network access, ECS is well worth checking out.

Elemental Agents Control Access
The Elemental Compliance System (ECS) knows all about each system the agent is installed on. There are literally hundreds of attributes an ECS agent reports back to the server for classification. ECS agents not only run integrity checks on hosts and enforce client-side configuration policies, but also provide a mechanism for managing hosts not running the agent. Managed hosts will either allow or deny connections from the unknown computers based on defined policy.

Elemental Security's Elemental Compliance System 1.0
Elemental Security's Elemental Compliance System (ECS) 1.0 can help you identify, assess and report on PC and server compliance from a single console using your guidelines or the built-in policy rules. Within 15 minutes, I started seeing similar device information on systems running agents and on those without agents. ECS is a solid first-edition product.
